It is imperative that there should be more transparency, accountability and inclusiveness so that no single perspective or stakeholder dominates the decision-making process on public policies.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-dd31d2c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"dd31d2c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>We therefore welcome the news that <strong><span style=\"color: #7263a9;\"><a style=\"color: #7263a9;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ombudsman.europa.eu\/en\/case\/en\/66036\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>the European Ombudsman opened a formal inquiry<\/b>\u00a0\u2192<\/a><\/span><\/strong> about how the European Commission has handled (in fact, ignored) concerns <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tobacco-europe.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/TE-Letter-on-Consultants-Conflict-of-Interest.pdf\"><strong><span style=\"color: #00a071;\"><b>raised by JTI <\/b>\u2192<\/span><\/strong><\/a> and regarding a potential conflict of interest situation.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8855f20 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8855f20\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>For some context, <strong><span style=\"color: #7263a9;\"><a style=\"color: #7263a9;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ombudsman.europa.eu\/en\/publication\/en\/183636\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><b>only 16% of all submitted complaints to the Ombudsman in 2023 were accepted and progressed to formal inquiries<\/b>\u00a0\u2192<\/a><\/span><\/strong> , thus underlining the gravity of the case.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c731f5c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c731f5c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>JTI has discussed this matter in the first Buzz@Bruss! edition. <a href=\"https:\/\/jtieuaffairs.brussels\/index.php\/2024\/03\/20\/challenges-with-the-brussels-approach-to-public-consultations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #00a071;\"><b>The full article can be accessed here<\/b>\u00a0\u2192<\/span><\/strong><\/a><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3060c41 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3060c41\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Our concerns were further exacerbated when it appeared that an employee of the lead consultancy firm hired by the European Commission to organize the public consultation on tobacco legislation has been actively engaged in anti-industry campaigns. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tobacco-europe.eu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/TE-Letter-on-Consultants-Conflict-of-Interest.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><span style=\"color: #00a071;\"><b>We once again expressed our apprehensio<\/b>n \u2192<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, via our industry association Tobacco Europe, that lobbying organizations with a clear agenda to influence European tobacco legislation are awarded taxpayers\u2019 money to lead public consultation processes while the industry\u2019s legitimate views, factual data and independent science are often simply ignored.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p>Every stakeholder, the industry included, needs to be able to contribute to the debate so that balanced decisions can be made based on submission of all relevant evidence. Otherwise, those decisions could always be open to accusations of bias.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-31db936 elementor-widget
